1 How does this work? Give me some examples of what you do.

We'll talk about what you want to accomplish with your photography. We’ll establish your priorities, and focus solely on them.

For example, you may want help editing and organizing your pictures.  You may want to improve your photography. You may want to know if your images are marketable.

What are your first steps?

Here are some specific examples of how I’ve worked with clients:

  • I’ve helped an aspiring pro edit his work to submit to a stock photography agency, resulting in an immediate offer to join them.
  • I’ve edited a serious amateur’s images, a half-dozen of which were ultimately published in calendars and greeting cards.
  • I’ve curated a working pro’s one-man show.
  • I've selected images for clients to enter major contests -- resulting in winning photographs in Nature's Best Magazine Backyards Photo Contest 2006, BBC Photographer of the Year and the 2007 Environmental Photography Invitational.  I've also selected a Camera Club's submissioin to Nature's Best Photography International Awards.
  • I've helped beginning photographers, serious amateurs, and working pros develop or improve their web sites.

Very few photographers feel that their images capture all they want to express. My goal is to help you fulfill your artistic vision.

3 Where do we meet?

When circumstances permit, it’s always preferable to meet in person.

image insight is based in Bronxville NY (lower Westchester County).
Just 15 miles north of Manhattan, it is easily reached by car or by public transportation: bus, Metro-North train, or subway.

But best of all, I'll come to you, since that's where your pictures are!

I also meet with clients before or after workshops and speaking engagements. If it's not practical to meet in the tri-state area (NY, NJ, CT), my current travel schedule is as follows:

March 8-13, 2011:   McAllen, Texas (NANPA Summit Conference)
May 8-16, 2011:      Santa Fe and area, New Mexico (see Horizon Workshops
New Mexico Adventure, in which I am co-instructor)

4 If it's impractical to meet in person, can I work with image insight over the phone and/or Internet?

Yes.

If you're shooting digitally, you can e-mail images or send me CDs, DVDs, or a portable hard drive.

If you're shooting prints, you can have a CD burned at the time you process your images -- then you can e-mail images or send me the CD.  Alternatively, you can have a second set of prints made.

If you're shooting slides, you can send me your transparencies via FedEx or an other traceable courier.

5 How will image insight tailor its services to my level of experience?

Beginner:  We’ll discuss what’s best about the pictures you’ve already taken. If your goal is to improve, we’ll explore additional ways of photographing the same subject (a different crop, camera position, etc.). I can review hundreds (or thousands!) of pictures quickly and select your strongest photographs. If your goal is to get organized, we’ll figure out the best approach, based on what you want to do with your images.

Serious amateur:  You’ve been shooting for years -- perhaps in a camera club -- and have made giant strides with your photography, but you’re wondering what to do next. I can help you edit your images more tightly, and hone your strengths. I can give you concrete ideas for exploring uses of your pictures, in addition to camera club competitions and exhibits.

Aspiring pro: You know you’ve got a good collection of images and the impulse to enter the marketplace, but which markets are most suitable for your photographs? Are your images submitted in a professional manner, to which picture buyers are more likely to respond? Which images are new and fresh, versus those that have been "done to death"? If you’ve switched from film to digital, I can help you get organized and integrate your slides and prints into a single top-quality collection.

Pro:  You’re already out there -– so you know you’d benefit from a seasoned expert’s fresh eye. I’ve worked with every venue:  advertising agencies, design firms, book and magazine publishers, greeting card companies, not-for-profit organizations, stock photography agencies, and more. I know what they want, how to get it to them, and what they’re likely to pay. I understand the complexities of the global marketplace and the impact of cultural nuance on image selection.

6 How should I best prepare for my first consultation with image insight?

Choose some of your favorite images, even if you’re unsure how you got them.  Your selection should be representative of what you love to shoot -– not necessarily what you usually shoot. Try not to limit your selection to the best 20 pictures you’ve ever taken. In fact, feel free to pull images that don't quite work – and we’ll figure out why. ("Runners-up" and "rejects" can be instructive.) If you have them, it's also be especially helpful to bring multiple images of the same subject. When we set up our appointment, we’ll determine the number of images with which we’ll work.

I’ll tell you what I think and why. My goal is to give honest, constructive feedback and specific suggestions.

8 Can I work with image insight if I don't have digital images?

Yes. Many of my clients have a mix of slides and/or prints, as well as digital images.

If you’re still shooting with print film, you can have a CD burned at the time you develop your images or you can have a second set of prints made. For existing material, you can send me a duplicate print or, if only one exists, the print. You retain the negative.

If you’re shooting slides, you can send me your transparencies (originals or dupes) via FedEx, UPS, or other traceable courier.
